The third wave of feminism addresses how women define themselves. There are no unifying issues like abortion and the ERA during the Second Wave, and many of the issues modern feminists address, such as the pay gap, rape, abortion, sexual harassment, and women’s representation in the media, are some of the same issues Gloria Steinem attempted to address 40 years ago.
There is NO consensus on what it means to be a feminist

Since the introduction of the internet to the feminist movement, every interpretation of Third-Wave feminism is easily distributed and easily believed.
As a result, at the same time feminist oriented websites like Everyday Feminism exist, advocating for equal rights for every person in the name of feminism, blogs like Women Against Feminism exist, rejecting feminism as man-hating, victimizing, unhelpful movement. There is no guiding force, like Gloria Steinem, anymore. It is far less likely that a leader like Steinem would emerge today because it is far less likely for anyone to be looking in the same direction at the same time. The movement has no core. There have certainly been improvements since Steinem began her fight, but fundamental inequalities still persist. |
